Annunciation means announcement. God sent the angel Gabriel to announce the birth of Jesus. Gabriel came to the village of Nazareth to a young woman named Mary who was engaged to a man named Joseph. Gabriel greeted Mary and told her that she would become pregnant. The baby would be a boy and she was to name him Jesus. Then the angel made another amazing announcement. The child would be called the Son of the Most High. God would give him the throne of his ancestor David and his kingdom would not end. Mary wondered how she would become pregnant since she wasn’t married yet. Gabriel told her that it would happen through God’s power. Gabriel then announced that Mary’s cousin Elizabeth was six months pregnant. This was an amazing announcement too, because Elizabeth believed it was impossible for her to have children. Mary answered Gabriel by saying “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be as you have said.”
